Miss Julie Baker of Merimbula (Canntaireachd).pdf

Miss Julie Baker of Merimbula, composed by Geoff Jones (2017) and entered in the Shasta Piping Society 2017 original piobaireachd composition contest. Of this piece, Jones writes:

A friend met through our mutual love of piping (and a longer story involving camels...but that will have to wait for another day), Julie was a beautiful young lady with a passion for life. In 2011 at the age of 23, Julie was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma in her brain, lung and liver. Thanks to treatment over several years from some wonderful specialists, Julie's life was extended for much longer than initial prognosis. Despite being quite unwell at times between treatments, Julie managed to go on many adventures and continue with many activities, including becoming a dance teacher, cycling in a 200 km bicycle ride to raise money for cancer research and treatment at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Centre (NSW, Australia), learning to play the pipes, and becoming a pilot. All of this while still in her 20s! Sadly, Julie passed away in December 2016 and was farewelled in January 2017.

Julie's love of life and the pipes inspired Geoff to compose a tune in her memory. Geoff's original tune for Julie was a light waltz which finished with a lament in the style of ceol mor. It was this lament that became the ceol mor piece included in this wiki, 'Miss Julie Baker of Merimbula' - fond memories.
